FYAKA

Family photography in London

Family sessions in London and beyond. Outdoor, documentary-style, mostly unposed. What you get at the end looks less like a photoshoot and more like a Tuesday afternoon you'll actually remember.

→ About Domagoj

The name comes from fjaka - a Croatian idea. A state of stillness, of wanting nothing more than what's already in front of you. It's a hard thing to find in a normal week. But sometimes, in the middle of playing on the floor with your kids, or walking somewhere together with no particular agenda - it finds you.

That's the moment I'm looking for.

What to expect

  • London parks, side streets, riversides. Your favourite spot or one of mine. Somewhere your family can actually move around.

  • I'll give you something to do together, then step back. The photos come from what happens after that.

  • A bit imperfect, recognisably yours. The kid who stopped listening. The dad who forgot the camera was there.

I don't feel present as often as I'd like.

But sometimes, when I'm on the floor with my sons and we both get lost in whatever we're doing, I get this feeling that we have all the time in the world. That nowhere else exists. Those moments don't last long. But they're the ones I keep coming back to.

I'm Domagoj. I'm Croatian, I live in West London, and I've spent the last couple of years trying to find more of those moments - through meditation, through slowing down, through paying closer attention to ordinary things. Photography became part of that. A reason to really look.

Fyaka comes from fjaka — a Croatian word for a particular kind of stillness. Not doing nothing. More like being fully somewhere, wanting nothing more than what's already in front of you. It's what I'm chasing in my own life, and it's the spirit I try to bring to a shoot.

I don't direct much. I'll suggest a location, give you something to do together, then mostly follow and wait. What I'm looking for are the in-between bits - the moment just before or just after the one you'd think to photograph. The tumble. The private joke. The kid who's stopped listening and found a stick.

The photos maybe won't be perfect. But they'll look like your family.

If that's what you're after, let's talk.
